Should Believers Be “Woke?”

The dictionary defines “conscious” as having knowledge of something; being aware; or being painfully aware of and sensitive to something. A conscious person is also described as one who is awake, aware of themselves, their thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, and capable of perceiving and thinking.

Unfortunately, the concept of being “awake” has been transformed into the term “woke.” This term has been both villainized and applauded. Right or wrong, it has become one of the most controversial and polarizing words today. Because of this, I have personally chosen to use the term “Conscious Christian,” a term that I feel best describes myself.

What is a Conscious Believer – Is it Biblical?

It is the faith-filled Believer who adheres to the biblical mandate to remain vigilant, alert, and aware of the enemy’s devices on all fronts (1 Peter 5:8). This includes, but is not limited to, the various racial, social, and other constructs used as propaganda and bait. These constructs are designed with the sole purpose of dividing and conquering mankind by our enemy, Satan.

A “Conscious Believer” pushes back against the criminalization of truth and epistemology at all levels! We do not need to use the term “woke,” because it implies that one has been asleep. Since the Born-Again Believer is no longer asleep, the weaponized term and its meaning are not applicable to us! Therefore, as conscious Believers, we must resist the urge to partake in or contribute to the enemy’s divisive agenda.

God has indeed called us to be conscious and aware—”wise as serpents and as harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16-18). However, to do so, we must first view everything through the lens of God’s love! Scripture tells us that we are to owe no man anything except to love one another(Romans 13:8-10). There are several biblical principles that I believe are key to helping us become the solution, rather than contributing to the ever-growing problem of division plaguing our world today.

Key Biblical Principles for Conscious Believers

1. Avoid Futile Debates: Paul instructed Titus to avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law because they were unprofitable and worthless (Titus 3:9).

2. Prioritize Peace & Unity: Christians are urged to “make every effort to live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18) and to “keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).

3. Speak with Grace & Humility: Colossians 4:6 tells us to “let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Believers are also encouraged to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger” (James 1:19).

4. Focus on Godly Character: Finally, instead of engaging in selfish ambition or bickering, we are called to act with compassion, kindness, humility, and gentleness. (Colossians 3:12-14). As Believers, our focus should be on doing good rather than winning arguments.

While we may not be able to solve the world’s problems, we can choose to become the “Agents of Change” that it so desperately needs although it may not yet recognize!
